Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3). “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. The fifth commandment is often referred to as the first commandment with a promise … “so that it may go well with thee…” Honoring parents is the only command in Scripture that promises long life as a reward and a blessing on your descendants. It is a vital lesson that is also taught by our example. This lesson is taught by word and deed and is a golden rule in life that will transform your child’s future success. Children must be taught to honor those in authority. The Word of God provides us with foundational guidelines which empower mothers and fathers to create a home environment that is permeated with a spiritual standard of living. The answer is yes! Remember this Bible truth: we live in this world but we are not of it! In a culture that invites individuality, disrespect and insolence, is it possible for us to teach our children to speak and act with reverence and consideration toward their parents, grandparents and others in authority? These voices lead us in countless paths but sadly, few lead us to the path God has chosen for us. We have become more accustomed to heed the myriad of voices that encompass our everyday lives.
However, we live in a world that has lost its ability to hear God’s voice. What amazing promises and all we have to do is listen to His voice and obey it! These blessings include good health, abundant joy, supernatural favor and provision. Think of it! God’s blessings will overtake us when we listen to His voice and obey what He decrees. One of my most beloved scriptures is found in Deuteronomy 28-there the Lord lists the many blessings that He will bestow upon His children when we listen to His voice and obey His commands.Īnd it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to observe to do all His commandments which I command thee this day that Jehovah thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth: and all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God…verses 1-2. It is so important to our Father that He chose to present it throughout scripture. This value is evident in that He chose to include this exhortation in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12). God places great value on the honor that should be shown to parents. “Honor thy father and thy mother, as Jehovah thy God commanded thee that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee…” (Deuteronomy 5:16)
However, the Lord designated His own law honoring our parents thousands of years before on Mount Sinai. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966.

President Calvin Coolidge also supported the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 in order to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." Four decades later, President Lyndon B. President Wilson later approved the idea of Father’s Day in 1916. President Woodrow Wilson initiated Mother’s Day as a national holiday in 1914 after the diligent efforts of a woman by the name of Anna Jarvis.
